Shemshak

Shemshak is the name of a village & a ski resort 57 Km away from central Tehran in the northeast. The village is on the Alborz Mountains and is one of three largest pists in Iran. Shemshak was a small and unknown village lost in the mountains before the beginning of the 20th century. Soon after discovering coal deposits in the region, Shemshak became important and a road was built to connect it to Tehran. After a few years at the end of mining operations, the village became a leisure resort for rich people due to its heavy snow winters and beautiful mountains surrounding it. In 1958, Shemshak ski resort was built, offering the upper class of Tehran a place to learn and practice this trendy sport from Europe.

Today, Shemshak is a famous place for people to go for relaxation and enjoying its fresh weather. Even-though the resort hasn’t expanded since its opening, it is still one of the largest in Iran. The proximity of Shemshak with other ski resorts like Darbandsar and Dizin, makes it the Ski Capital of Iran!

The ski resort base elevation is about 2,550 meters and the top elevation is about 3,050 meters. There is a hotel, some restaurants and ski, snowboard and sleigh rentals in the area. Also there are electric lights including LED lamps along the piste allowing better visibility for night skiing. The ski time in northern Tehran has changed year by year but in general the best time for skiing in Shemshak is early Dec to late March.

We will have a one night stay in a house in the upper part of the village.

Azad Kuh Mountain (4,400 m / 14,288 ft)

Azad Kuh Mountain is one the first ten highest peaks in Iran. The mountain located in the central Alburz high mountains. Azad means free and Kuh means mountain. Free mountain might be a local name, because this peak has a cone shape which is separated from other surrounding mountains.

The Azad Kuh Mountain is a giant and a huge rocky summit that rises in the Central Alborz mountain range. If you assume a line from Tehran to the north direction “Noshahr”, Azad Kuh located somewhere in the middle. In three directions of the summit of Azad Kuh, east, north and west faces are surrounded by steep rocky walls, more than 500 meters tall. In the summer climbing there is no need to use any technical equipment.

After transferring from Tehran to the house in Shemshak, one night resting in our special home place at 2700m altitude could prepare you feeling fresh for the next three days of peak hiking and lands trekking (Azad Kuh 4370m) and two nights camping experience. In departure taking a shower and comfortable sleeping in the house, would be please you for the next day departure after breakfast. On the second day after transferring to the base of the mountain, we have long trekking to reach the camp place. Approximately we will hike around 1200 so you have to be fit for the climb. All of the equipment and food and extra stuff carried through mules and we just carry our day pack. We will stop on the treks during our hiking to the camp. We know same spot and viewpoint and also a good location for the photography. One of the main important points in Azad Kuh trek is a vast valley and way to the top have different attraction and beauty if we want to compare with other mountain in Iran. Azad Kuh trek is NOT only a climbing to the top. The flora & fauna, wildlife, visibility of many mountains from the peak like Alam kuh (4800 m) and the roof of Iran, Mount Damavnd (5671 m) is so amazing from the top.
The third day is summit day and we have to carry water and our packed lunch and takes around 10 hours. Totally ascending is around 700 m from our camp with steep slope to reach the peak.
On the day 4 we packed everything and collect the equipment and camp and start descending to the base and drive back to Tehran
