On this trip we will be biking in two regions with different climates. The first region is 4 days biking in the northern part of Iran through mountains and forests in the eastern part of the Alborz range and the second region is 3 days biking in a predominantly flat desert in the central desert of “Dashte- Kavir”. It’s going to be a new experience for bikers to go through totally different landscapes and colors in one week biking. The connecting region chosen to join these two different landscapes is Kharturan National Park with its unique flora and fauna. You will be visiting remote areas in the heart of forest and desert giving you the opportunity to visit local people and their lifestyle tasting their food and experiencing their customs. We start the journey from Tehran by a private vehicle to Orost village in the northern Mazandaran province where biking will start for 4 days towards Sahroud city in the neighboring Semnan province. From here we will drive to Central Desert and continue biking through the desert for 3 days in Esfahan province. We will be visiting some oases and villages in the Central Desert before driving to Esfahan to visit its numerous touristic attractions. Total biking days will add up to 7 days, 3/5 is the biking grade for mountainous areas and 2/5 is for desert. The approximate length of the route for biking is 350 Km with lots of ups & downs. A support vehicle will be with us during the trip carrying luggage and the bikes. The road is a combination of mountains, forests and back roads between villages and dirt road in the desert. We will cross small towns, villages, oases, a variety of different landscapes and ecosystems, historical monuments, old towers, springs and rivers. There will be elevation gain starting with about 1650 meters in eastern Alborz and pedaling close to 2600 meters above sea-level. The desert part altitude is around 1000 m from the sea level. There will be many spots for excellent views of mountains with snowy peaks depending on the season. In this trip the main activity is mountain biking (moderate to challenging) but you should have enough previous experience to handle long mountain biking.
Our crew of professional desert drivers with 4×4 vehicles will support us during the biking in the desert.
The biking route in the desert is part of the old and famous “Silk Road”. We have carefully chosen a part of this route that offers different eco-systems and changes in the landscape which simply are quite astonishing. The main part of the route is flat but sometimes for having the best views and visibility we will go on the sand dunes in the desert. For 3 nights we will have a mix of local home stay, guest houses and camping in the oases. Depending on the season we might see semi wild camels, rabbits, foxes and if lucky enough some beautiful scorpions!!!!!!
In the desert you will be biking more or less on the same route that Sven Anders Hedin, (19 February 1865 – 26 November 1952), the Swedish geographer and topographer, explorer, photographer and travel writer travelled by paddle steamer in 1886.
